Sapphire, N.C. – The Mercer men’s golf team opened competition at the Hummingbird Invitational on Monday, shooting a combined 11-over, 295 to tie for 15th place at the event. The Bears were paced by freshmen
Alex Street and
Thomas Holmes, who each posted 73’s on the first day of action.
All four of Mercer’s golfers contributing scores on day one were freshmen. Street and Holmes are tied for 36th place individually, while
William Meason is tied for 51st after carding an opening-round 74.
Matt Kocolowski needed 75 strokes to complete 18 holes while sophomore Devin Patel turned in a 77.
"I thought the guys did okay out there today," head coach
Andrew Tredway said. "I know they're not too pleased with where we stand but I honestly thought it was closer to a good round than we have been all year. We made a few mistakes at the end of the round that really cost us, but I thought they played inspired out there which is all I can ask."
Kentucky shot a combined 279 (-5) and leads the tournament. Both Mercer and Elon sit four strokes ahead of Gardner-Webb (299) and just one stroke behind College of Charleston (294).
"We are excited to get out there tomorrow and play well," Tredway said. "I think they are going to put together a sub-285 round.".
Day two of the Hummingbird Invitational gets underway on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. Patel will begin Mercer’s wave of golfers, teeing off at 9:50 a.m.
