MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University baseball program hosted its inaugural alumni game on Saturday afternoon at Claude Smith Field as part of the 2009 Mercer Homecoming weekend festivities.
All alumni were invited to participate and the turnout featured former players from multiple graduating classes. Graduates from as recent as 2008, first baseman Steven Karwatt, to all the way back in 1981, Tommy Campbell and Dave Jedneski, came out to play in the first annual event. The teams were divided up into odd and even graduation years to balance out the competition.
“It was a great day for Mercer baseball, the turnout we had and the support we received from our alumni and their families was overwhelming,” head coach
Craig Gibson said. “It was great to see so many decades of graduates represented and we hope this event is the beginning of many good years to come.”
The Orange team (even year graduates) ended up beating the Black team (odd year graduates) 6-2 in the actual game that featured 60-70 Mercer baseball alums.
The 2010 version of the Bears concludes the fall semester with individual workouts as they continue preparations for their season opener, on Feb. 19 at 4:00 p.m., against Morehead State at Claude Smith Field.
