MACON, Ga. – Mercer setters
Chelsea Gebben and
Nickie Halbert each had 22 assists and five digs as the Bears swept Stetson 3-0 (25-20, 25-7, 25-20) in Friday night’s Atlantic Sun volleyball match held at the University Center.
Mercer takes its third consecutive victory and improves to 9-17 (7-10 A-Sun) while Stetson (1-24, 0-18 A-Sun) remains winless in conference play.
“We’re starting to put together a good stretch, but we can’t take anything for granted,” Mercer head coach
Noelle Rooke said. “We’ve got to come ready to work tomorrow against a very talented FGCU team.”
Mercer sophomores
Rachel Urbelis and
Amiee Frutchey both contributed double-double performances in the win. Urbelis tallied a match-high 13 kills and added 12 digs while Frutchey chipped in 12 kills and 10 digs of her own.
In the second set, Frutchey was a perfect five-for-five on attack attempts as the Bears rolled to a 25-7 win. Frutchey finished the contest with a match-high .556 hitting percentage.
Stetson was only able to muster a .038 attack percentage in the second frame.
Mercer only trailed twice during the entire match: Stetson took leads at 1-0 in the first set and 5-4 in the third set.
Sophomore libero
Charlotte Harris recorded 12 digs as the Bears limited the visitors to a .160 hitting percentage.
Mercer junior middle blocker
Libby Hansch turned in a solid performance, smashing ten kills on just 16 swings with only two errors.
Erica Vrvilo pounded out seven kills on 12 attempts in the win.
Friday night’s match marked senior night as the Bears honored Gebben in her final nighttime home match of her career. Gebben and the Bears will wrap up their regular season home schedule on Saturday, Nov. 7 hosting FGCU. Match time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
