MACON, Ga. - For the second time this week, Mercer University's men's tennis team tossed a shutout at its opponent, this time scoring the 7-0 win over Fort Valley State University at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears are now 2-0 for the spring season.
Mercer opened the day with a team point for sweeping the doubles competition, doing so in dominant fashion.
The No.1 doubles duo of Peter Tauchner and Victor Dias posted an 8-2 win over the Wildcats Drew Belk and Tomy Williams. At the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, the Bears' teams both had 8-0 wins. The second doubles pair of Evandro Rosindo and Adam Hunt topped FVSU's Kenny Thornton and Dwayne White, while the third doubles win belonged to Matthew Poleon and Fernando Amendaris (over Fort Valley's Kevin Oliver and Brandon Pringle).
Mercer continued the dominant display at singles. In the No. 1 singles, Rosindo won a 6-1, 6-1 decision over White. Tauchner was equally impressive at No. 2, where he blanked FVSU's Williams, 6-0, 6-0.
The story was much the same at the Nos. 4-6 spots, where Poleon, Dias and Hunt all won, respectively. Like Tauchner, Poleon served bagels to the Wildcats' Thornton, 6-0, 6-0, followed by Dias' 6-1, 6-1 win over Belk and Hunt's 6-1, 6-0 takedown of Oliver.
At the No. 3 singles slot, Mercer's Amendaris was engaged in a prolonged battle. However, with his teammates cheering on the final match on the courts, Amendaris chipped away at Pringle and put the win in the can for the Bears' team, 6-3, 6-2.
