Senior captain helped lead Mercer to inaugural #SoConWLAX Championship
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer senior midfielder Lindsey Zeltwanger was named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week (March 30-May 6) for her standout performances in the conference's women's lacrosse tournament, the league office announced Wednesday.
Zeltwanger totaled 13 points on five goals and eight assists over two games as she led Mercer to the inaugural SoCon Women's Lacrosse Championship at Five Star Stadium in Macon on May 3-5. The SoCon assists leader tallied three assists and three goals in Mercer's thrilling 18-17 victory over top-seeded Detroit Mercy before notching a five-assist, two-goal effort against third-seeded Furman in the title game. She added six groundballs and three draw controls on the week.
Zeltwanger's performances helped Mercer clinch the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships in just the program's fourth year of existence. It is the first time Zeltwanger has been named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week. She was the conference's offensive player of the month for March and also claimed All-SoCon First Team and All-Tournament Team honors last week. She will leave Mercer as the most decorated women's lacrosse player in program history.
A product of Cincinnati, Ohio, Zeltwanger is a business marketing major with a grade point average well above the required 3.3 to be eligible for the weekly academic honor. Zeltwanger and the Bears (9-10) are set to face Wagner (N.Y.) in the NCAA Tournament play-in game at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The contest will be played at Hameline Field in Staten Island, N.Y.
