Trips to Florida State, Florida Gulf Coast, new Savannah tournament among highlights
MACON, Ga. – Mercer men's head basketball coach Greg Gary on Thursday announced a challenging but intriguing non-conference schedule for the 2022-2023 season. The non-conference schedule includes trips to East Carolina, Georgia State, Florida State, a Thanksgiving tournament in Savannah, Florida Gulf Coast and Troy. The Bears have traveled to Tallahassee, Florida, before to face Florida State and many Mercer fans will remember the touted contests in years' past when Mercer battled "Dunk City" (Florida Gulf Coast) as members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Coming to Hawkins Arena are Milligan College, Winthrop, Kennesaw State, Middle Georgia College and Morehead State.
"We are looking forward to a challenging non-conference schedule," Gary said. "We will be tested on the road vs FSU, East Carolina, Georgia State, FGCU and Troy University. We will also be traveling to Savannah to play in an MTE with three games in three days over Thanksgiving break. We will play against varied styles and in a tournament situation, which will prepare us for the upcoming SoCon season."
The Hostilo Community Classic on Thanksgiving weekend in Savannah, Georgia, will feature contests for the Bears against Robert Morris, Fairfield University and Towson State, a top 75 team in the country. Mercer is assured of playing each of these teams on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of that week. The tournament will be held in the new Enmarket Arena in downtown Savannah.
Coach Gary begins his fourth season leading the Mercer men's program. Gary's squads have recorded 51 wins in his first three seasons; 51 wins in three seasons is the most by any coach in school history. The Bears have quality experienced players returning. Senior Kamar Robertson started 17 of 29 games he played in last season and played some of his best basketball at the end of the season in the Southern Conference Tournament. Senior James Glisson III is the other returning starter who averaged in doubles figures last season at 10 points per game. Post player Shannon Grant returns for his junior season after seeing action in 31 games last year. Shawn Walker Jr. will be another senior starter for the Bears after starting 20 games in 2021-22. Local product Jordan Jones, who played high school ball at First Presbyterian Day School in Macon, became a fan favorite last season when he stepped in and started 10 games at point guard as a true freshman. The Bears also welcome four new transfer players for the 2022-23 season: Nana Akenten from Nebraska/Southeast Missouri State University, Jalen Cobb from Fordham, Jalyn McCreary from South Carolina/South Florida and Luis Hurtado Jr. from UAB/Bryant University.
Mercer fans are also anxious to see incoming freshmen Jah Quinones from Orlando, Florida; Michael Zanoni from Charlotte, North Carolina; TJ Grant from Kathleen, Georgia (Veterans High School); and David Craig from Johannesburg, South Africa (McCallie High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
