MACON – CJ Miller's career night on Saturday in 22nd-ranked Mercer's 38-34 comeback victory over Southern Conference rival East Tennessee State grabbed a bigger spotlight on Monday when the junior running back was crowned as the Stats Perform FCS National Offensive Player of the Week.
Â
Miller, a product of Gadsden, Ala., and Gadsden City High School, ran for 172 yards and two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 5:40 remaining, to help the Bears improve to 3-0 in SoCon play for the second-straight year. Miller also established career highs for both receptions (4) and receiving yards (41) to finish the night with 213 all-purpose yards.
Â
The performance showcased the 8th-highest single game rushing yards total in program history, while Miller's 29 rushing attempts ranks third all-time in program annals. It was the most carries by a Mercer running back since Tyray Devezin ran for 168 yards on 29 carries in a 38-33 loss at ETSU on Nov. 16, 2019.
Â
Boasting a SoCon-best 381 rushing yards already, Miller ranks 15th in NCAA FCS with 95.3 rushing yards per game as well. He is averaging 6.05 yards per rushing attempt this season.
Â
The Bears (3-1, 3-0 SoCon) will be back in action again on Saturday when they take on visiting Samford (0-5, 0-3) to highlight Family Weekend on campus. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. and tickets can still be purchased by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets.
