MACON, Ga. – Mercer University is partnering with Facebook for the live broadcast of Tuesday's men's basketball game against Davidson at Hawkins Arena.
Tapping into the 1.79 billion active monthly users on the world's largest social media network, Mercer is believed to be the first individual schools to broadcast a Division I collegiate athletics event solely over the prominent social media channel.
The "all-in-one engagement platform" will allow fans to watch Mercer's game against Davidson Tuesday night over the social media outlet in any manner they choose – computer, tablet, phone or smart TV app. The game will be shown on the Mercer Athletics Facebook page and will be shared by the Southern Conference, Atlantic 10 and Sports on Facebook. Those pages together have more than four million likes and bring the opportunity to easily watch from anywhere on the planet.
More than just a traditional broadcast, the Facebook platform will allow a fully integrated experience for fans with in-game communication via comments. Mercer will have opportunities to win free Bears gear and other prizes to fans who take advantage of the engagement opportunities on the Facebook Live post as viewers' comments will show beside the live action.
Mercer (4-2) will show its most high –profile home game in Tuesday's broadcast when the Bears welcome perennial power Davidson (4-1) at Hawkins Arena, a home where Mercer is 73-12 since the 2011-12 season.
"We know this is the future," Mercer associate athletic director for external relations Daniel Tate said. "Our goal is to be one of the trendsetters and this is where the future of sports is going."
