Mercer Football Elects Captains for 2016 Season

MACON, Ga. – Mercer head football coach Bobby Lamb announced Thursday that linebacker Tosin Aguebor, tackle Bret Niederreither, quarterback John Russ and linebacker Tyler Ward have been elected team captains for the 2016 season following a vote of the team.
For Aguebor and Russ, it marks another year of leadership in the Orange and Black. Russ has started all 35 games for Mercer since the school reinstituted the program.
"Certainly it is an honor to be a captain. It is one of the highest honors you can receive because the players – your peers – vote on it," Lamb said. "Bret Niederreither and John Russ will be representing the offense and from the defense it will be Tyler Ward and Tosin Aguebor. Those are great men both on the field and off the field, they do it the right way and they work hard."
The four Bears elected by their brethren will lead the team and represent the Orange and Black each week on the gridiron.
Lamb's announcement of the team captains comes as the team reaches one week until the 2016 season kicks off at Five Star Stadium in Macon. The Bears host the 15th-ranked Bulldogs of The Citadel on Sept. 1, a team that claimed a share of the Southern Conference championship last year.
"We wait until the last possible minute to vote on captains because I want to see who is going to be the leader of this team during spring practice, during summer workouts when nobody is watching and during preseason camp. Those four rose to the top," explained Lamb.
Single game tickets for the season opener on Sept. 1 are currently on sale at tickets.mercer.edu. Tickets can also be purchased by calling the Mercer Ticket Office at (478) 301-5470.
