MACON, Ga. – Mercer University athletics director Jim Cole announced Thursday that Patrick Walsh has been appointed the school's new assistant athletics director for media relations. Walsh assumed his duties in Macon beginning Monday.
Â
At Mercer, Walsh will be responsible for handling the publicity of football, baseball, women's golf and all aspects of the administration.
Â
"Patrick comes to Mercer with a wealth of experience working at all levels of collegiate athletics," Mercer director of athletics Jim Cole said of Walsh's hiring. "His accomplishments are numerous and well-noted. His considerable experience, energy and enthusiasm will help lead Mercer in the years to come."
Â
Walsh transitions to Macon after spending the last seven years as the associate director of athletic communications at Louisiana Tech where he was the primary contact for football, men's golf, men's and women's cross country and men's and women's track and field.
Â
"I am extremely excited to join the Mercer Family and to return to the Southern Conference," Walsh said. "I would like to thank Jim Cole and Brian Gerrity for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the team. I am excited to hit the ground running and to work with the student-athletes and coaches. Mercer has achieved a tremendous amount of success, especially in recent years, and I am looking forward to telling all of the great stories of this university."
Â
He has collected over 20 publications and writing awards in his career including his football game notes ranking as Best in the Nation by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) in 2015, his bowl media guide ranking second in the nation by CoSIDA and being awarded the best feature/recap story by the LSWA in 2015.
Â
"He has a vision for our program that will help to elevate the Mercer brand across all platforms that will be noticed by both fans and the working members of the media that cover Mercer Athletics," senior associate athletic director and Mercer Athletic Foundation executive director Brian Gerrity said. "We are very happy to add Patrick to our staff."
Â
In his tenure at Louisiana Tech, Walsh was responsible for the promotion of three national award winners (Ryan Allen, 2011 & 2012 Ray Guy Award; Colby Cameron, 2012 Sammy Baugh Award) as well as two other national award semifinalists (Colby Cameron, 2012 Davey O'Brien Award; Quinton Patton, 2012 Biletnikoff Award) along with seven All-Americans. He orchestrated season-long promotional campaigns that resulted in Louisiana Tech being presented bids to the 2011 Poinsettia, 2014 Heart of Dallas and 2015 New Orleans bowls while also promoting Tech's football team to its the highest ranking in school history (18th - Associated Press; 19th - USA Today/Coaches; 20th - BCS) during the 2012 season.
Â
He also promoted Chelsea Hayes to the 2012 Joe Kearney Award, given to the Western Athletic Conference's top athletes as Hayes became the first Louisiana Tech athlete to ever win that award. That season, Hayes went on to become the school's most decorated athlete with her sixth All-America honor and then promoted the long jumper as she qualified for Team USA, competing in the XXX Olympiad in London.
