Mercer Claims Series Win Over UNC Asheville

Chase Burks earns first win of the year on the mound
MACON, Ga. – Senior right-hander Chase Burks overcame a slow start to toss six innings and earn the win in Mercer's 9-2 series-clinching victory over UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park.
After allowing two runs on four hits through the second inning, Burks (1-0) found his groove and limited the Bulldogs (2-4) to one hit through the final four frames of his start. He finished with five strikeouts and walked only one batter.
A two-run home run by Brandon Michie in the bottom of the fourth tied the game, 3-3, and sparked a rally that was capped by Trey Truitt's go-ahead RBI-single four at-bats later. The Bears (5-2) never looked back, adding one run in the sixth – a solo home run by Truitt – and four in the eighth. Christian Vann earned his first save of the season with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief while striking out four batters.
Coach Gibson's Take
Opening statement:
"It feels good to get a series win over a quality UNC Asheville club," said head coach Craig Gibson. "Asheville's pitching staff held our offense down early on, but we stood our ground and were able to get some hits pieced together later in the game.
"We're starting to settle down defensively. Today all started with Chase Burks on the mound…I thought it was one of our better games."
Player of the Game
Chase Burks set the tone in the front end of Saturday's doubleheader, going six innings while allowing two runs on five hits. The senior allowed only one hit over his final four innings of work, buying the Bears' bats time to stage a fourth-inning rally.
