Mercer Rallies Past Georgia Southern, Snaps Skid
3/14/2018 10:32:00 PM | Baseball
Bears defeat Georgia Southern for first time since 2015
Â
The win was Mercer's (13-5) first against the Eagles (7-10) since a 4-1 victory in Statesboro on March 3, 2015. Mercer improved to 4-0 against in-state opponents this season.
Â
With Mercer trailing 8-6 entering the bottom of the eighth, RJ Yeager scored on a wild pitch after leading off with a single and advancing to third base on a bloop single by Sean McDermott. A RBI double past Georgia Southern's third baseman and down the left-field line by Kyle Dockus scored Jordan Ammons – pinch running for McDermott – to tie the game at 8-8. Alex Hanson joined the offensive burst with the Bears' fourth straight hit, a single, to move Dockus to third and set up Posas' go-ahead hit.
Â
Mercer would plate two more runs in the eighth on bases-loaded walks by Jackson Ware and Yeager, providing insurance for Robert Broom, who earned the win with 3.2 innings of relief on the mound.
Â
Three Georgia Southern home runs gave the Eagles a 5-1 advantage through 4.5 innings as they chased Mercer starter Sawyer Gipson-Long. A four-run fifth inning by the Bears would make things interesting, however, as Posas drove Dockus home with a RBI double and Trey Truitt provided fireworks with a game-tying three-run long ball.
Â
Christian Vann struck out four Eagles over 1.1 innings to bridge the gap from Gipson-Long to Broom. He allowed a pair of runs as Georgia Southern reclaimed the lead for a two-inning frame before Mercer completed the rally.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
Opening statement:
"This was a great win for our guys to get on our home turf against a quality in-state opponent," said head coach Craig Gibson. "We obviously didn't want to get behind early, but we were able to get rolling in the fourth inning and respond well.
Â
"I think we put together some better at bats later in the game. We drew walks, selected good pitches and make it count with a few big-time hits from the likes of [David] Posas, [Trey] Truitt and Kyle Dockus. Some quality pitching performances from [Christian] Vann and [Robert] Broom were key for us as well down the stretch."
Â
"Player of the Game
A pair of pivotal hits in Mercer's fifth- and eighth-inning rallies earned David Posas tonight's honor. The redshirt sophomore went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Not only did Posas drive home the go-ahead run in the eighth, but he sparked an earlier rally with his RBI double to keep Mercer close.
