Trey Truitt notches five RBI, adds grand slam
MACON, Ga. – Mercer clinched its fourth series victory of the season with a 10-3 win over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
Trey Truitt went 3-for-4 with five RBI and a pair of home runs, including a sixth-inning grand slam that put the game well out of reach from Eastern Kentucky (7-13). Mercer (15-5) scored six runs in the sixth, all on two outs.
Â
Mercer and the Colonels traded blows in the second and fourth innings before Mercer scored twice in the home half of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead it never surrendered. The Bears collected 13 hits in total as Truitt, David Posas (2-for-3, 3 RBI) and Kyle Dockus (2-for-4) had multi-hit efforts. Chase Burks (3-1) earned his third win of the season with a strong performance, going 5.2 innings. He scattered three runs on seven hits and struck out four batters.
Â
Christian Vann was dominant over 2.1 innings of hitless relief as he tossed five strikeouts to put the Colonels away for good.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
Opening statement:
"Chase Burks really set the tone for us in today's win with a quality start on the mound," said head coach Craig Gibson. "Christian Vann was really special today and I'm happy to see Tanner Hall get in there at the end…we need him to do well.
Â
"It was great to get another series win against a good ball club. We did a lot of things right today after a strange game Friday night."
Â
On the offensive attack:
"The turning point was our sixth inning. We scored all six on two outs; Drew Lingo started it with a great at bat. [Kyle] Dockus, [Alex] Hanson, [David] Posas and JT Thomas all kept the inning alive until we got to Trey Truitt's grand slam.
Â
"Truitt was special today. That's the guy that was a [2017 Preseason Gold Spikes Award Watch List] player not too long ago. He's starting to lead us and take this team. We need him moving into conference play."
Â
Player of the Game
Tip the cap to Trey Truitt, who is officially on fire over the last 12 games. The senior right fielder tallied his team-leading seventh home run of the season while extending his career-long hit streak to 12 games. Truitt also added his first assist of the season, throwing out a Colonel at home plate in the ninth inning.
