Bears down Austin Peay 3-1 to wrap up Mercer Bears Classic
MACON, Ga. – The Bears held off a late rally by Austin Peay to improve to 19-10 on the season, besting the Governors by the final score of 3-1. Mercer concludes the Mercer Bears Classic with a record of 3-2, improving to 12-2 in home games on the season.
Â
Mercer 3, Austin Peay 1
The Bears opened the scoring first in the bottom of the opening inning, scoring two runs on two hits and leaving one stranded for the 2-0 lead. Megan Lane opened the scoring with an RBI single through the right side of the infield, plating Laurenne Sanchez from second. After a stolen base and wild pitch, Lane crossed the plate following an RBI single up the middle of the bat of Quirisa Mauga.
Â
Mercer added an insurance run in the bottom half of the second inning as Emma Andrew laced a solo shot off the scoreboard, her fifth home run of the season.
Â
Austin Peay ruined the no-hitter and shutout with one swing of the bat in the top of the fourth as Danielle Liermann belted a home run to center field, cutting the Mercer lead to just 3-1. The Governors tried to cut further into the lead until Morgan Rackel was caught stealing home to end the inning.
Â
Neither team threatened to score again until the top of the seventh when the Governors loaded the bases with just one away, setting up the drama. Natalie Schilling roped a one-hopper to Mauga at third who proceeded to throw out Mattson at home for two outs and the bases still loaded. Preston induced a pop up to Mauga to end the threat and preserve her second save of the season.
Â
Jill McElderry improved to 6-2 on the campaign, throwing six innings of work and yielding six hits and one run. The senior from Florida also struck out seven batters in the victory.
