Mercer claims 6-3, 2-1 come-from-behind victories over Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Mercer pulled off a doubleheader Saturday sweep over the Mocs of Chattanooga, claiming a 6-3 victory and a 2-1 triumph. Both of Mercer's wins were come-from-behind wins as the Bears improved to 21-10 on the season and 2-0 in Southern Conference action.
Â
Game 1: Mercer 6, Chattanooga 3 (9)
The Mocs jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning following an Emma Sturdivant single up the middle, plating Hayleigh Weissenbach from second for the early 1-0 advantage. Chattanooga added one run in each of the next two innings, including a solo blast from Brook Womack, stretching the Mocs' lead to 3-0.
Â
The Bears cut into the deficit in the top of the fifth inning as Laurenne Sanchez laced an RBI single through the right side of the infield, bringing home Shaila Warren from second. Mercer was unable to trim the deficit further as Megan Lane grounded out to second with runners on the corners to end the scoring threat.
Â
Mercer would not give in, scoring yet another run in the top of the sixth inning. This time it was fellow freshman Micayla Rood with an RBI base knock to right field, plating Kate Buckland from second to cut the Mocs' lead to just one.
Â
Mercer carried the momentum into the top of the seventh inning as Meghan Rud led the inning off with a single down the left field line. After Sanchez moved Rud to second, Lane delivered a clutch base hit up the middle, allowing Rud to fly across home plate for the game-tying run.
Â
After a scoreless eighth inning, the Bears claimed their first lead and opened the flood gates in the ninth, scoring three runs on three hits and one Chattanooga error. Rood opened the inning with a single and later advanced to third after Warren reached on a fielding error by Sturdivant. Mercer captured the lead following Rud's third hit of the game, this time a two-run single up the middle. Rud later scored in the inning after an RBI single off the bat of Caroline Taylor, stretching Mercer's lead to 6-3.
Â
Stella Preston picked up the win for Mercer, throwing six scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out five batters. Preston came in for relief of Megan Bilgri who threw three innings of work, allowing three runs and striking out three Mocs in the process.

Â
The Mocs capitalized on the momentum swing in the bottom of the fourth inning after Cameren Swafford connected on her first career home run, a solo shot to left center, giving Chattanooga the 1-0 advantage.
Â
The Bears were able to tie the game up in the top of the sixth inning, scoring one run on two hits. Lane led off the inning with a bloop-single, reaching base safely for the 10th consecutive game.
