Mercer displays dominance in 11-0 victory over Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Mercer made sure it didn't have to come-from-behind in Sunday's contest, jumping ahead early and pounding the Mocs for an 11-0 victory. The Bears completed the sweep over Chattanooga, Mercer's first-ever Southern Conference sweep and first conference sweep since taking down Florida Gulf Coast in 2014 when the Bears competed in the Atlantic Sun. With the win, Mercer improves to 22-10 on the season and sits atop the conference standings with a 3-0 mark.

Mercer 11, Chattanooga 0 (5)
The Bears never trailed in game three of the weekend series and made sure of that, scoring four runs on four hits and one Chattanooga error. The first two runs of the game came via the two-run double down the left field line off the bat of Quirisa Mauga, plating Laurenne Sanchez and Megan Lane. The final two runs of the first inning came off RBI singles from Emma Andrew and Allie Jones.
Â
Mercer plated three more runs in the second inning thanks to three hits and one Mocs' error. The first run of the frame came off a bases-loaded wild pitch, scoring Meghan Rud from third. The Bears then took a 6-0 lead after a dropped third strike. The Chattanooga catcher was able to throw Caroline Taylor out at first, however Sanchez scored on the throw after an amazing heads up play. Mercer took the 7-0 lead following an RBI single from Mauga.
Â
The Bears officially implemented the eight-run mercy rule in the third inning after Jones swiped third and scored following a throwing error by Beltran. The lead was then stretched to 10 after back-to-back RBI doubles by Mauga and Andrew. The final run of the game came in the top of the fifth as Mercer kept its foot on the gas following an RBI ground out from Lane.
Â
Stella Preston hurled a complete-game shutout, limiting the Chattanooga bats to just four hits. Preston struck out one batter in the contest and came through in the clutch in the fourth inning, inducing consecutive pop ups in the infield with bases loaded and one away to preserve the shutout. With the win, Preston improves to 6-3 and brings her ERA down to just 2.28.
