Mercer holds ETSU to just five hits over 14 innings
MACON, Ga. – The Bears improved to 5-0 in conference action for the first time in program history, dating back to the launch of Mercer softball in 1986. The Bears' pitching stole the show on Friday, throwing 14 shutout innings as the Bears held the Bucs to just five hits and zero runs. Mercer claimed 2-0, 3-0 victories over the visiting Southern Conference foe, improving to 24-10 on the season and 5-0 in the Southern Conference. Mercer has now recorded three consecutive shutouts and have not surrendered a run in the last 22 innings.
Â
Game 1: Mercer 2, ETSU 0
Despite only collecting one hit, the Bears were able to walk away with the 2-0 victory in their SoCon home opener. The Bucs collected the first hit of the game in the top of the third but were unable to send the go-ahead run home.
Â
Mercer notched its only hit in the bottom of the fourth inning with a Quirisa Mauga one-out single to right field. After Abby Walsh walked with two outs to put Mauga in scoring position, the Bucs made a critical mistake following an Ogle throwing error. Micayla Rood hit a comebacker to Ogle who sailed the ball over the first baseman's head, allowing both Mauga and Walsh to cross the plate for the 2-0 Mercer lead.
Â
The Bucs threatened to score in the final inning of play after a two-out single and an error placed runners on first and second. However, Megan Bilgri was successful in inducing a game-ending pop up to Emma Andrew to secure her eighth win of the season.
Â
Bilgri finished the game with a complete-game shutout, striking out five batters and yielding just three hits and one walk. Bilgri improved to 8-4 on the season after her eighth complete game and third shutout of the campaign.

Game 2: Mercer 3, ETSU 0

Â
The Bears did cross the plate in the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits and leaving just one player on base. The first run of the frame came via Laurenne Sanchez's RBI groundout to second base, bringing home Shaila Warren from third. After a two-out double from Megan Lane, Taylor plated the Bears' second run with a frozen rope right back from whence it came. With Mercer ahead 2-0, Mauga added an insurance run with a double over the head of the center fielder, allowing Taylor to score from first.
Â
The Bucs never added any pressure to Jill McElderry waiting until the fifth inning to record their first hit of the game. McElderry improves to 8-2 with the win, throwing seven shutout innings and surrendering two hits, while striking out three batters and yielding zero walks. This is the seventh complete game for McElderry, running her shutout count to three on the season.
