Mercer plated four runs to complete second consecutive conference sweep
MACON, Ga. – The Bears walked away with yet another conference sweep, this time capping off a three-game series with ETSU after winning 4-1 on Saturday afternoon. After not registering a conference sweep since 2014, the Bears have kicked off the Southern Conference slate with back-to-back sweeps. Mercer improved to 25-10 on the season, including a perfect 6-0 in conference action.
Â
Mercer 4, ETSU 1
Both squads were locked in a pitcher's duel early on, with Mercer registering the game's lone hit through the first three innings of work. The Bucs collected their first hit in the fourth inning, but were unable to bring home the go-ahead run from second.
Â
The Bears received a boost from Caroline Taylor in the bottom of the fourth inning, belting a two-run shot to deep left center. Taylor's eighth home run of the season immediately followed Megan Lane's leadoff single to right center.
Â
Mercer had a chance to extend its lead in the fifth inning, loading the bases with nobody out. However, the Bears were unsuccessful in adding an insurance run following an infield fly, strikeout and fly out to conclude the threat.
Â
The Bears did extend their lead in the sixth inning, scoring two runs on three hits. After an Abby Walsh two-out single, Micayla Rood stepped up for her third hit of the game with a double to left center, plating Walsh from first. Allie Jones registered Mercer's final run of the game with a pinch-hit single to center field, bringing home Rood from second for the 4-0 advantage.
Â
The Bucs would not go away quietly, loading the bases in the top of the seventh inning with just one away. ETSU snapped Mercer's shutout streak with a Chernak sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Laughren to trim the Bears' lead to 4-1. With the tying run at the plate, Warren was able to reach on a fielder's choice. However, Martindale was ruled out for runner's interference to end the game, colliding with Emma Andrew who was attempting to field the final out of the ball game.
Â
Stella Preston pitched a complete game for Mercer, allowing two hits and just one unearned run. Preston picked up her seventh win of the season, while also punching out four batters.
