Mercer Scores 33 Runs, Routs Holy Cross
3/5/2018 9:26:00 PM | Baseball
Bears set program records for runs scored, hits in a single game
Â
The football-esque run total was a result of another program record – 28 hits – as Mercer (10-2) won its seventh straight game and clinched the series victory against Holy Cross (1-7). Mercer scored in every inning it had an at bat, including at least five runs in four separate frames.
Â
Mercer batted around the order four times in the first, fourth, sixth and eighth innings. Four Bears – Brandon Michie, Le Bassett, Sean McDermott and Cory Wright – connected for home runs while the team tallied 10 extra base hits in total.
Â
Chase Burks (2-0) earned the win in his third start of the season with five innings on the mound. Four relievers held Holy Cross to two runs on three hits as the Bears' offense handled the rest of the damage.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
Opening statement:
"This was one of those games when everything clicked to the fullest degree for our offense," said head coach Craig Gibson. "Our guys take a quality approach to every at bat and we are thankful to be on the right side of this one.
Â
"We'll look to keep it rolling into the series finale and try to earn a sweep today; that's the most important thing about this victory."
Â
Player of the Game
Mercer's power radiated from Brandon Michie, who went 4-for-4 with five runs batted in and a grand slam. The junior transfer is batting .444 with a team-leading 21 RBIs this season.
