SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the second consecutive week, a Mercer Bear has taken home a weekly Southern Conference honor. This time, senior pitcher Jill McElderry has been named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week.
McElderry appeared in two games this week, earning complete-game wins in both of her starts. In her first start of the week, the Florida native pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and just one earned run. McElderry punched out six batters in the 2-1 win over Lamar, improving to 3-1 on the season, while also lowering her ERA to 1.73.
The senior righty was back in action yesterday against Alcorn State, holding the Braves to just two hits and one run through five complete innings. The Bears dominated the Braves, 9-1, forcing the run rule in the fifth. McElderry allowed zero walks and struck out seven batters, improving to 4-1 with a 1.69 ERA and a team-high 42 strikeouts.
McElderry and the Bears have a vigorous week ahead, squaring off with Detroit Mercy tomorrow at Sikes Field at 6 p.m., before hitting the road on Wednesday to take on Jacksonville at 6 p.m. in Jacksonville, Fla. Mercer will then take part in the Rafter Memorial Tournament this weekend hosted by Kennesaw State, taking on Fort Wayne, Belmont and Kennesaw State.
