Mercer Drops Series with Second Loss to Samford
4/14/2018 2:00:00 PM | Baseball
Bears tally eight hits but score just once in 6-1 loss
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mercer's lineup was quelled by strong Samford pitching for a second straight game Saturday at Joe Lee Griffin Field, resulting in a 6-1 defeat in Southern Conference play.
Â
The loss for Mercer (26-11, 6-5 SoCon) clinched the weekend series for Samford (22-14, 9-2), which won its 11th straight contest in the process. Mercer tallied eight hits – six more than in Friday's 7-0 loss – but mustered just one run in the seventh inning.
Â
Chase Burks gave Mercer another stout performance on the mound, limiting the Bulldogs to four runs (three earned) on six hits over 5.2 innings. The right-hander took the loss, falling to 4-3. Mercer's first dose of run support this series came via Drew Lingo and Jordan Ammons in the seventh inning. Lingo led off the frame with a pinch-hit double to left field and was followed by a RBI single from Ammons. Another Mercer rally seemed to formulate in the eighth when RJ Yeager and Jackson Ware opened the inning with singles, but both were unable to score.
Â
A double down the left-field line in the bottom of the first gave Samford an early lead. Burks settled in over the following four frames before consecutive RBI singles in the sixth stretched Samford's advantage to 3-0. After Mercer plated its lone run in the seventh, Samford added two runs of its own on three hits in the home half of the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"I thought we got quality starting pitching for a second straight game, this time out of Chase Burks," said head coach Craig Gibson. "We were better with the bats offensively today but once again could not get momentum rolling in our direction.
Â
"Samford did a great job with two-out hitting and took advantage of a few situations that proved to be key points in the ball game. [Samuel] Strickland pitched well against us. We'll regroup once again and look to salvage the series with a win on Sunday."
Â
Player of the Game
Jordan Ammons was Mercer's most productive bat Saturday, going 2-for-3 with one run batted in. The redshirt freshman plated Lingo in the seventh to give the Bears some momentum. He is batting .347 in 46 at bats this season.
