Mercer seventh in team standings with 36 holes to play

MACON, Ga. – Payton Schanen is tied for the individual lead after shooting an even par 72 in the first round of the 2018 Brickyard Collegiate, presented by Mizuno Golf, at The Brickyard Golf Club on Sunday.

Mercer owns sole possession of seventh place as a team after shooting 22-over-par (310) over the first 18 holes of play. The 15-team field experienced cold conditions Sunday morning as play extended into the afternoon.

Coach Drinkard's Take
"Payton [Schanen] positioned herself well today and gave herself some quality looks at birdies," said head coach Michele Drinkard. "She hit 14 greens and putted really well despite facing cold conditions this morning.

"The Brickyard is in great condition and is a fair and challenging course. Look for the Bears put a better score Monday and move up the leaderboard tomorrow."

Mercer on Team Leaderboard
Other than tournament leader Vanderbilt (+6), the Bears are within seven strokes of all teams ahead of them heading into Monday's second round at The Brickyard Golf Club. Mercer leads two Southern Conference foes, ETSU (+29) and Samford (+33).

Mercer on Individual Leaderboard
Birdies on No. 2, 8, 10 and 14 powered Schanen to be one of three individuals with even par rounds Sunday. The junior was two-under-par through 14 holes before a pair of bogeys dropped her back to even for the day.

Hannah Mae Deems (+3) is tied for 14th and well within striking distance. Her lone birdie of the round came the par-3 No. 5.
