Talented freshmen earn second set of freshmen All-American honors
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Mercer's RJ Yeager and Le Bassett were named to the 2018 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American Team, the organization announced Monday.
Â
Both Bears were named to the NCBWA's second team. It is the second time in as many weeks that Yeager and Bassett were named freshmen All-Americans; they earned the same honors from Collegiate Baseball on June 6. Mercer is one of seven schools to place two players on the 32-man squad, which was split into first and second teams.
Â
Yeager and Bassett are two of five Southern Conference players and two of three players from Georgia schools included on the 32-man team. To view the full team, click here.
Â
A product of Lynn Haven, Fla., Yeager was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year by league coaches after starting all 60 games at shortstop for the Bears. He batted .324 with six home runs, 53 runs scored and 42 runs batted in and was one of Mercer's most consistent bats in conference action (.319). Yeager was also a second team All-SoCon selection.
Â
Bassett, a native of Tifton, Ga., emerged as the SoCon's top power threat in his first year of college action. The left-hander starred in the designated hitter role for Mercer and led the league with 17 home runs while adding 60 RBI. Bassett's 17 home runs were a program freshman record and came in just 39 starts. He batted .282 overall and slugged a team-best .678.
Â
The NCBWA's Freshman All-American Team is voted upon by the membership of the NCBWA. The 2018 NCBWA National Freshman Player of the Year and National Freshman Pitcher of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, June 12. Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of collegiate baseball.
