MACON, Ga. - The Mercer men's basketball team added another honor to its memorable 2013-14 season, capturing the 2014 ESPY for the "Best Upset" at tonight's awards show at Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
Head coach Bob Hoffman along with departing seniors Monty Brown, Kevin Canevari, Daniel Coursey, Jakob Gollon, Langston Hall and Bud Thomas were in Los Angeles to accept the award at ESPN's annual star-studded event.
The Bears jumped into the national media spotlight with an upset of the sixth-ranked Duke Blue Devils in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, providing one of March Madness' signature moments in 2014. Mercer became just the 18th No. 14 seed in NCAA Tournament history to ever knock off a No. 3 seed, before closing out the 2013-14 campaign with a 27-9 overall record.
One of three nominees for the honor, Mercer beat out the University of Connecticut's men's basketball team's run to the NCAA title and Chris Weidman's knockout of Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight championship.
