Sikes Field and the Skelton Complex represent two important chapters in the history of Mercer University Athletics. Together, they showcase the university’s commitment to providing outstanding facilities for student-athletes while honoring individuals whose lives and generosity have shaped Mercer’s athletic tradition. Today, these facilities serve as key components of Mercer’s softball program and broader athletic infrastructure, reflecting decades of growth, investment, and community support.
Sikes Field serves as the home of Mercer softball and is located in the heart of campus near the University Center. The facility is dedicated to the memory of First Lieutenant Thomas Gary Sikes, a member of Mercer’s Class of 1967. A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Sikes earned his commission through Mercer’s ROTC program and later served as an Army infantry unit commander with the 23rd Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. He was killed in action on December 20, 1968, and was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. Naming the field in his honor ensures that future generations of Mercer students remain connected to his legacy of service, leadership, and sacrifice.
For many years, Sikes Field provided a home for Mercer softball, but one of the most significant moments in its history came in 2006 when the university launched a major renovation and reconstruction project. Construction began during the summer of that year, with the goal of transforming the facility into a premier NCAA Division I softball venue. Existing fencing and seating were removed as crews undertook a complete modernization of the complex.
The rebuilt facility opened later in 2006 with numerous upgrades, including a new playing surface, renovated dugouts, improved drainage and irrigation systems, expanded bleacher seating, and a computer-controlled lighting system. These improvements enhanced both player performance and the overall fan experience. Additional amenities such as an enclosed press box, video platform, and concession area helped elevate the venue to the standards expected of a Division I athletics program. Today, Sikes Field seats approximately 300 spectators and continues to host Southern Conference competition, camps, clinics, and community events.
Adjacent to Sikes Field is the Skelton Complex, which further strengthened Mercer softball’s ability to compete at a high level. Named in recognition of the Skelton family’s support of Mercer Athletics, the complex was developed to provide enhanced facilities for the softball program, including team support areas and infrastructure designed to improve the daily experience of student-athletes and coaches. The addition of the complex complemented the improvements made to Sikes Field and demonstrated Mercer’s long-term investment in the growth of its softball program. Through these enhancements, the university created an environment that supports recruiting, player development, and competitive success.
Together, Sikes Field and the Skelton Complex symbolize two important themes that run throughout Mercer Athletics: honoring the past while preparing for the future. Sikes Field serves as a permanent tribute to a Mercer alumnus who gave his life in service to his country, while the Skelton Complex reflects the generosity and vision of supporters committed to advancing Mercer’s athletic programs.
