MACON, Ga. – Mercer golfers Sarah Louie Brown and Lacey Fears each fired 73's at Oak View golf course to help the Bears finish day one of the 2011 Eat a Peach Collegiate atop the team leaderboard. Mercer's round one total of 295 outpaced second placed Shorter University by 11 strokes.
"We played good today," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "We've got to get out there tomorrow and focus and stop making simple mistakes. If we do that we will really show what we can do."
Fears and Brown are tied for second place individually, just two strokes behind Shorter's Fiona Cooper day one total.
All told, Mercer has five players in the top five of the standings. Junior Aurelie Wiriath posted a 74 and sits in fourth place while sophomore Mary Alice Murphy and junior Kimmy Graff each fired 75's and are tied for fifth.
Junior Alicia Poole competed as an individual and carded a 76 on Sunday. Poole's day one total slots her seventh overall.
Kaitlin Marrin (80), Jessica Arthur (83), and Keri Lynn Carson (84) also competed as individuals on Sunday. Marrin is tied for 12th place, Arthur is tied for 19th place and Carson is tied for 23rd place overall.
The final round of the Eat a Peach Collegiate is scheduled to begin 8:30 a.m. on Monday.
