ARLINGTON, Texas – The Mercer men's golf team used 603 strokes in Monday's first and second round of the UTA/Waterchase Invitational, slotting the team in a tie for ninth place. Mercer's day at the Waterchase Golf Course was highlighted by sophomore Hans Reimers' second round 68.
Mercer's 603 on Monday equaled the efforts from Texas-San Antonio, Texas Wesleyan and Southern Mississippi. Wichita State leads the 19-team field with a 36-hole total of 570.
"I'm obviously a little disappointed in our result today," Mercer head coach Steve Bradley said. "I think that we were well prepared for this event, I just don't think that we went out there and played our game."
Mercer's 603 places the team one stroke off the pace of Southern Illinois for eighth place and three strokes ahead of Central Arkansas.
"Overall I was happy with their effort because we didn't quit and kept fighting," Bradley said. "We look forward to getting out there tomorrow and turning it around."
Reimers' 68 came in conjunction with a first round 74 and has the Albany, Ore. native tied for third place individually. Reimers' 68 was four strokes under par and tied Wichita State's Tyler Glenn for the second lowest round of the day.
Sophomore James Beale posted back-to-back 75's on Monday and is tied for 36th place individually. Junior Alex Street finished day one with a two round total of 154 (78-76) and is tied for 63rd.
Junior Thomas Holmes carded a first round 80 and improved upon that total by three strokes in the second round. He is currently tied for 76th place overall.
John Wilson Gordon used 82 strokes in the first round and 79 swings in the second, placing the freshman in a tie for 87th place.
Tuesday's final round of the UTA/Waterchase Invitational begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
