MACON, Ga. – Tuesday's final round of the Chris Bannister Golf Classic was cancelled due to persistent rain in the Huntsville, Alabama area. The Mercer women's golf team finished fourth of eight teams at the event which was held by Jacksonville State at the Hampton Cove Golf Course.
The tournament was originally formatted as a three-day, 54-hole tournament, but steady rain slowed play in Sunday's opening round and ultimately caused the cancellation of play on Monday and Tuesday.
Led by sophomore Mary Alice Murphy's one-over 73, Mercer completed day the first round with a team score of 307. Mercer's day one total placed the team four strokes behind Lamar for third place. Mercer's 307 outpaced Memphis (310), Tennessee Tech (320), Austin Peay (332) and Montevallo (344).
Murphy's 73 gave the Lookout Mountain, Tenn., native a tie for second place in the individual standings, three strokes off the pace of individual champion Marissa Steen (Memphis).
Samford earned the tournament title with a cumulative total of 294 on Sunday while host Jacksonville State (302) took a second place finish.
Mercer junior Aurelie Wiriath tied for 12th place with an opening round 76 while junior Kimmy Graff and freshman Sarah Louie Brown each posted 79's and finished tied for 17th. Sophomore Lacey Fears was slotted in a tie for 28th place after recording an 81 on Sunday.
