JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Jamie Duffy led four Mercer players in double-figure kills, but the volleyball team was ultimately defeated by Jacksonville 3-2 (17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 18-25, 15-8) in Saturday afternoon's Atlantic Sun volleyball match at Swisher Gymnasium.
Jacksonville improved to 4-16 (2-5 A-Sun) while Mercer's bid for two-straight wins was denied and the Bears dropped to 7-10 (3-4 A-Sun).
Duffy's 16 kills combined with 22 digs as the Manhattan Beach, California native booked her fifth double-double of the year. Her 16 kills came with only three errors as she topped a .300 hitting percentage for the second time this season.
Freshman Molly Locke booked her ninth double-double of the year with 15 kills and 16 digs. Sophomore Caroline Carlton led all Mercer players with a .419 hitting percentage earned on the strength of 15 kills and two errors.
Senior Monica Sanchez tallied a season-high total of 52 assists while notching nine digs.
In the deciding fifth set, the score was knotted at 7-7 before a Mercer attacking error gave way to five-straight Jacksonville points. Moments later, a Mercer service error concluded the match.
Mercer returns to A-Sun play at East Tennessee State on October 9. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
