KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Sophomore Lacey Fears fired a 2-over 74 to lead Mercer to a tie for 15th in Sunday's opening round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic. Mercer's team score of 315 equals the Bears with Morehead State and Old Dominion in the team standings.
Augusta State leads 33-team field with an impressive 286 in the first round. The Jaguars outshot second-placed Elon by 17 strokes, while Campbell (307) is third on the leaderboard.
"We could have played better," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said.
Through her first 14 holes on Sunday, Fears was four-over par. In the final four holes, she rallied with two pars and two birdies to help lift her to a tie for 10th place individually. Her 74 outpaced 169 other competitors on Sunday.
Sophomore Mary Alice Murphy and freshman Sarah Louie Brown each needed 79 strokes on Sunday and are tied for 56th overall. Kaitlin Marrin recorded an 83 on Sunday while Aurelie Wiriath shot 88. Marrin is 124th overall while Wiriath sits in a tie for 166th.
The second round of the event is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m.
