Women's Golf Retains Lead at JU Classic

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sophomore Lacey Fears fired a 73 in Monday's second round of the Jacksonville University Classic and Mercer held its lead on the six-team field. As a team, the Bears totaled a 311 in the second round to maintain a 10-stroke edge over the next closest team.
Mercer's 311 brings the team's tournament total to 607. Host Jacksonville holds steady in second place with a two-round total of 617 after equaling Mercer's 311 Monday. Daytona State (625) is third while Florida Gulf Coast (634), Florida Atlantic (636) and USC Upstate (645) round out the field.
"Scores were higher today because of the weather conditions," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "Tomorrow we have to come and show that we can play better."
Fears went into the clubhouse atop the individual leaderboard for the second-straight day and will start Tuesday's final round with a three-stroke advantage over the next closest player. Her 73 on Monday tied for the second-best individual round of the day and came on the heels on an opening-round 71.
Sophomore Mary Alice Murphy and junior Aurelie Wiriath are tied for sixth place individually with 36-hole totals of 153. Murphy signed for a 78 on Tuesday while Wiriath needed 79 strokes to complete the day.
Freshman Sarah Louise Brown used 81 strokes on Tuesday while sophomore Kaitlin Marrin shot 83. Marrin (159) holds sole possession of 15th place while Brown (161) is part of a five-way tie for 19th.
Tuesday's final round of the JU Classic is begins at 10:10 a.m.
