CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. – Sophomore Mary Alice Murphy fired an even-par 72 in Sunday's final round of the University of Cincinnati Invitational to lead the Bears to a fifth place finish. Murphy's three-day total of 223 gave her Mercer's top finish, tying for seventh place.
Mercer's team score of 305 on Sunday pushed the team's tournament total to 927, one stroke short of Xavier and four strokes behind third placed Morehead State. Florida International claimed the team title with a three-day total of 878 while Stetson was next best at 902.
Murphy's 72 capped a weekend in which the Lookout Mountain, Tenn. native booked scores of 74 and 77 in the opening two rounds. Murphy completed the tournament as one of only five participants to card eight or more birdies, helping her outpaced 97 competitors.
"Mary Alice continues to be the leader in the team by posting an even par 72 today," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "She is the most consistent golfer on the team."
Junior Kaitlin Marrin also had a solid showing on Sunday, scoring a 2-over 74. Marrin's Sunday performance moved her tournament score to 238 and tied her for 46th.
"Kaitlin is becoming one of the top players on the team," Guyer said. "Her 74 was a solid round of golf and her dedication is starting to pay off."
Also tying for 46th was freshman Sara Louie Brown, who's Sunday 81 came on the heels of an 80 and a 77 in the previous two outings. Junior Aurelie Wiriath tied for 36th overall with a three-round total of 236. Wiriath's final round 80 was a three-stroke improvement on her second day total.
Sophomore Lacey Fears finished the event with her second straight 79 and tied for 52nd with a score of 240.
Mercer returns to action in the Atlantic Sun Championship at Victoria Hills Golf Club in Daytona Beach, Fla. Dates of the event are April 9-11.
