Beale Leads Men's Golf at Irish Creek Invitational

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Mercer sophomore James Beale continued his strong play on the opening day of the Irish Creek Invitational, firing back-to-back 68's in the first two rounds. Beale's Saturday effort has him tied for second individually and Mercer in second place overall.
As a team, Mercer opened the event with a 285 and improved upon that total by five strokes in the second round. The Bears' cumulative score of 565 is 12 strokes behind Kent State for the tournament lead. Duke is two strokes behind Mercer and third on the leaderboard.
Beale's 36-hole score is just two strokes off the pace of Xavier's Sebastian MacLean and equaled the effort from Kent State's Mackenzie Hughes. His Saturday performance outshined 71 other competitors and marked his ninth and tenth sub-par rounds of the year.
Josh Cone opened the event with a 3-under 69 before shooting an even part 72 in round two. His tournament score of 141 slots him in a tie for 14th individually.
Trey Rule opened with a 75, but rebounded to shoot Mercer's low round of the day with a 5-under 67 in his second 18. Rule's 142 places him in a tie for 16th.
Hans Reimers collected scores of 73 and 74 and is tied for 39th while Thomas Holmes shot used 149 (76-73) strokes and is tied for 48th.
John Gregory Joseph is competing as an individual and is tied for 68th overall (155).
The final round of the Irish Creek College is set for an 8 a.m. start Sunday.
