Men's Golf Tied for Sixth at A-Sun Championship

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's golf team compiled an aggregate score of 303 in Monday's opening round of the 2012 Atlantic Sun Championship, placing in a tie for sixth on the team leaderboard. Sophomore James Beale led the way for the Bears, firing a 1-under 71 on the first day of action at the Legends Course of Chateau Elan.
Mercer's 303 equaled Jacksonville's effort and positioned the team four strokes behind USC Upstate for fifth place. No. 8 North Florida leads the tournament with a score of 287, while East Tennessee State (288) and Kennesaw State (291) are second and third.
Beale's 71 marked his 10th straight round without shooting over par and slotted him in a four-way tie for fourth place. Entering Tuesday's second round, Beale is three strokes off the pace of the individual lead, set by North Florida's Sean Dale and ETSU's Rhys Enoch.
Freshman Trey Rule opened his first conference tournament with a 76 and is tied for 23rd while Thomas Holmes signed for a 77 and is tied for 26th. Josh Cone posted a 79 and is tied for 37th while Hans Reimers shot 81 and is tied for 44th.
The second round of the 2012 A-Sun tournament begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
