ATHENS, Ga. – James Beale's stellar sophomore season ended on a high note Saturday, as Mercer's lone representative in the 2012 NCAA Men's Golf Championship finished his showing at the UGA Golf Course with a 69 (-2). Beale's best round boosted him to a tie for 26th place on the overall leaderboard.
Of the 10 individual participants, Beale's three round total of 218 was fourth-best. Mississippi's Joe David advanced to the NCAA Championship Final with the region's best total (212).
Beale's 69 was one of only two sub-70 rounds posted on Saturday, and came on the strength of a 3-under back nine. Of the 75 participants, only 18 shot below 70 in any of the three rounds.
Beale's inclusion in the 2012 NCAA Championship marked the second time in program history a player has been invited as an individual to the NCAA Championship. Bill Jones III earned the school's first at-large spot in May of 2009.
