MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Mercer women's soccer team had its lone warm-up of the season on Friday night and although its opponent, Middle Tennessee State walked away with the 1-0 victory, the Bears were able to get some welcomed work for the season opener now less than a week away.
Friday was also the first time new head coach Tony Economopoulos was able to see his new team against a live opponent. Economopoulos will now have a week to make any adjustments before the start of the regular season, when Mercer plays host to Southern Mississippi next Friday night.
The two teams played three 30 minute periods with the Blue Raiders getting the decisive goal just over 15 minutes into the second period. The Bears put in thorough work in and were able to further prepare for the regular season. Some players worked out at different positions and perhaps most importantly had a chance to go full speed against an opponent other than themselves.
Unofficially, the Bears had seven total shots in the game to MTSU's total of nine.
The Bears travel back to Macon and continue to prep for the start of the 2012 regular season as Southern Miss heads to Bear Field for a 7 p.m. kick-off next Friday night.
