MACON, Ga. – Senior Charlayna Braxton pounded out seven kills on 21 swings in the Mercer volleyball team's 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-18) loss to Northern Kentucky on Friday night at Hawkins Arena.
Mercer dropped its second-straight match and fell to 6-8 (2-2 A-Sun) while Northern Kentucky pushed its winning streak to three and improved to 15-2 (3-1 A-Sun).
Braxton's also collected a pair of block solos, a block assist, a dig and an assist in the losing effort. Her classmate Jamie Duffy also collected seven kills while adding 14 digs and a pair of blocks.
Junior libero Emily Rochefort tallied a team-high 17 digs in the loss, while freshman Molly Locke booked eight kills and eight digs.
In the opening set, Mercer was up 10-8 when a well-placed kill by NKU senior Kelly Morrissey sparked a 5-0 run for the Norse. A timeout by Mercer head coach Damian Elder halted the surge, but the Norse would not surrender that lead for the remainder of the frame.
In the second set, Mercer trailed 18-17 before the visitors went on a 4-1 run and ultimately pulled out a 25-22 win. In the third set, the teams were knotted at 10 before another Northern Kentucky charge moved the visitors in front, 16-11. From there, the Norse cruised to a 25-18 final set victory.
Mercer returns to A-Sun play hosting Lipscomb on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
