
Volleyball Upended at ETSU, 3-1

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Junior Caroline Carlton and freshman Ellie James combined for 23 kills as the Mercer volleyball team fell 3-1 (27-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17) to East Tennessee State on Tuesday evening at Brooks Gym.
The Bears dipped to 1-20 (0-11 A-Sun) on the year while ETSU jumped to 15-7 (9-1 A-Sun).
Mercer battled hard all night, starting with an opening set that featured five tie scores and two lead changes. Mercer led 21-17 in the set before the Bucs battled even with four straight points. The teams would also share ties at 22-22, 24-24 and 25-25 before the hosts captured a 27-25 victory.
Mercer would ultimately get on the board in the third set, limiting the potent ETSU offense to .111 hitting on only 10 kills in 27 attempts during the frame. In the fourth set, the teams would share nine ties and have four lead changes before ETSU claimed the victory.
Senior setter Carly Iannarino dished out 29 assists in the loss while freshman Tori Penrod added 14 of her own. Senior Emily Rochefort registered 15 digs and sophomore Molly Locke booked 11 digs.
Mercer resumes A-Sun conference play hosting Florida Gulf Coast on Friday at 7 p.m.
