MIAMI LAKES, Fla. – The Mercer women's golf team shot 299 in Tuesday's final round of the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge to move into seventh place on the final team leaderboard. Junior Lacey Fears notched the team's highest individual finish, placing 11th on the heels of a final round 71 (-1).
Mercer's 299 on Tuesday came in conjunction with scores of 307 and 308 in the opening rounds to place the team three strokes ahead of Xavier (917) and four strokes in front of Missouri (918). NC State captured the tournament championship while Florida International (886) and Miami (895) finished second and third, respectively.
"Our players finished strong, as they typically do," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "We beat some very good teams and that should give us confidence, but we've got to work on starting stronger."
Mercer was one of just five teams to post a sub-300 round on the final day of the event. Sophomore Sarah Louie Brown closed out her tournament with a 76 and placed tied for 38th with a score of 231. Sophomore Mary Alice Murphy and senior Kaitlin Marrin each tied for 42nd with scores of 232. Senior Aurelie Wiriath rounded out Mercer's competitors with a score of 235 and a tie for 54th place.
"Kaitlin finished the final 14 holes at two-under," Guyer said. "If we're going to compete for a conference championship, we need her to play like that."
Mercer returns to competitive play on March 17 at the Ocala Spring Collegiate hosted by Morehead State.
