
Volleyball Concludes Play in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Junior setter Carly Iannarino dished out 26 assists as the Mercer volleyball team fell to UNC Wilmington 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-21) in its final match at the UNC Wilmington Courtyard Classic on Sunday. Iannarino was later named to the All-Tournament team.
Mercer slipped to 1-9 on the season while UNC Wilmington improved to 8-2.
At the Courtyard Classic, Iannarino piled up 95 assists in three outings, averaging 9.5 assists per set. She also added 14 digs, four block-assists and two kills in 10 sets played.
On Sunday, Iannarino's 26 assists aided seven different Mercer hitters in recording kills. Junior Caroline Carlton led the way offensively with nine kills on 23 attempts. Sophomore outside hitter Molly Locke paced the Bears with 14 digs while senior libero Emily Rochefort chipped in 13.
Mercer gained its first lead of the match in the third set, as back-to-back kills by senior middle blocker Zoe Becton and freshman outside hitter Avery Hoven lifted the team to a 7-6 advantage. The Bears would eventually go up by as many as four, but the Seahawks used a 5-1 run to break away from a 20-20 tie and secure the victory.
Mercer returns to action in its home opener against Atlantic Sun foe East Tennessee State on September 20. Match time at Hawkins Arena is scheduled for 6 p.m.
