Women's Soccer Comes Up Short against Tennessee, 2-0

MACON, Ga. – Despite outshooting one of the premier teams in the Southeastern Conference, the Mercer women's soccer team came out on the wrong end of a 2-0 decision against Tennessee on Sunday afternoon at Bear Field.
Mercer (2-3-1) out-shot Tennessee (5-1) 19-13, including a 9-7 edge in shots on goal, but were unable to finish a chance in the final third in its fourth-straight match against a member of the SEC.
The Volunteers jumped on the board in the 23rd minute of play when senior Tori Bailey fired a shot from about 22 yards out that skimmed just under the crossbar to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Tennessee would take that 1-0 lead into intermission despite being out-shot by Mercer 10-5 in the stanza.
The second half was very even throughout, as both teams had quality chances, but couldn't put a ball away.
Tennessee locked up its second and final goal of the contest in the 89th minute of action when junior Hannah Wilkinson was awarded a penalty kick attempt which she converted to make the final score 2-0.
Mercer goalkeeper Maggie Cropp was tremendous in net all day long for the Bears, making five saves in the contest. Junior Stephanie Giangiuli led the Orange and Black with four shots in the loss.
Mercer will continue its season-long seven game homestand on Sept. 12 when it welcomes Charleston Southern into town. Game time is schedule for a 7 p.m. start at Bear Field.
