
Volleyball Upended at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman Bailey Noon collected a team-high 10 digs as the Mercer volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-20) in Southern Conference action at the Pete Hanna Center on Wednesday evening.
The Bears dropped to 4-12 (1-3 SoCon) with the loss while the Bulldogs won their sixth-straight and moved to 10-7 (4-0 SoCon).
Noon's season-high 10 digs came in conjunction with a service ace. Junior Molly Locke chipped in seven kills and seven digs, while freshman Claire Walizcek and sophomore Hannah Noon combined for 27 assists.
In the opening set on Wednesday, the Bulldogs raced out to a 4-1 lead and eventually extended the advantage to 17-10 midway through the frame. The Bears retaliated with a 5-2 run to get within four, but couldn't close the gap any further the rest of the way.
The second set saw Mercer surge out to a quick 5-0 lead, but a 7-2 Samford charge ultimately tied matters at 14-14. Later in the set, the Bulldogs scored three-straight points to gain a 19-16 lead and never looked back.
The final set featured 12 tie scores and six lead changes, but the hosts were able to pull away from a slim 20-19 lead with a 5-1 run.
Junior Monica Johnson added six kills on 16 attacks while freshman Emily Krogman registered five kills on 16 attacks.
Mercer continues league play hosting Chattanooga on Oct. 11. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
