GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Mercer University men's golf team ended the opening day of the SunTrust Gator Invitational in 11th place, finishing with a two-round score of 594.
The Bears, who are competing in a loaded field that includes 12 Golfweek.com Top 100 teams and three Top 25 programs, recorded a score of 299 in the opening round, before carding a 295 to close out the day.
"We had a very encouraging finish to the day, after understandably shaking off a little rust from a three-month break," said head coach Kirk Kayden. "Several guys really stepped up down the stretch, so we are looking to carry that momentum into tomorrow's final round."
Defending SunTrust Gator Invitational medalist Trey Rule led the way for the Bears, posting scores of 72 and 75 en route to 32nd place. Emmanuel Kountakis finished one stroke behind with a two-round total of 149 on the strength of five birdies.
Freshman Jerry Ren carded scores of 73 and 77 on his way to a total score of 150, while Jeffrey Heinicka, Jr. rounded the scoring with today's total of 152 including a team-best 1-over round of 71 to wrap up the day.
Mercer will close out the spring's opening event tomorrow morning, as the action is set to tee off at 8:50 a.m.
