Women's Tennis Falls 4-3 to Western Carolina in SoCon Debut

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis team lost a close matc,h 4-3, to Western Carolina on Saturday afternoon to open Southern Conference play.
Mercer won the doubles point with an 8-3 win by Grace Korta and Roxy Bartz, as Western Carolina only had five players, causing the Catamounts to forfeit both a doubles and a singles match.
The Bears took a 3-0 lead when Roxy Bartz defeated WCU's Montse Mesalles (6-3, 6-1) at the number five spot to open singles play. The Catamounts rallied to win the final four singles matches and take a 4-3 win over the Bears.
Both Xandra Fougner and Haley Powell played their matches to three sets. Fougner forced a third set after winning her second set, but ultimately fell to Megan McLinden (6-2, 3-6, 7-6(6-4)). Powell won her first set before Erin Maguire took the last two (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) and clinched the win for Western Carolina.
The Bears will be back in action on Monday, March 9 with they face Louisiana-Monroe in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.
