Men's Golf Closes Second Round of Tiger Invitational in 15th

OPELIKA, Ala. – The Mercer University men's golf team carded a 10-over-par 298 in the second round of Auburn's Tiger Invitational on Monday morning.
The Bears, who improved by 11 strokes from their opening round total of 309, have compiled a total team score of 607 for the tournament and will head into Tuesday's final round in 15th place.
"Our guys played better today and showed some improvement, but we just haven't put it all together quite yet," said head coach Kirk Kayden. "Trey (Rule) had an excellent round to lead us and three of the other guys were just a bad hole or two from having solids scores as well."
Trey Rule moved up 12 spots on the leaderboard on Monday with a 1-under 71. The senior heads into the closing round of play in a tie for 29th with a 36-hole total of 148.
Freshman Jerry Ren finished the day in a tie for 38th, carding a 76 today for push his total score to 150. Sean Smothers fired a 75 this morning to move into 53rd with a total of 152, while Emmanuel Kountakis' 76 rounded out the scoring for the Bears.
"Each guy is continuing to work hard and that will help our results as we move forward," added Kayden. "We have a great opportunity to get better tomorrow."
Mercer closes out the tournament tomorrow, when the action tees off at 9:30 a.m. EST.
