
Bears Downed by Florida International in Three Sets

DELAND, Fla. – The Mercer University volleyball team fell to the Panthers of Florida International in the final match of the Stetson Invitational by a score of 3-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIU claimed the first set by a mark of 25-18 to gain a 1-0 lead in the match. The second stanza was highly contested, as the score was deadlocked at 24-24 late before the Panthers managed to win the next two points and take the set 26-24. FIU was too much for Mercer in the third, winning the frame 25-13 to take the match 3-0.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Junior libero Tori Penrod was named to the Stetson Invitational All-Tournament team for her defensive efforts against FIU and last night versus Stetson. Penrod led the team on Saturday with 17 digs and also recorded two assists and an ace. The 17 digs give the junior 50 for the two-match invite.
STAT OF THE DAY
The block party continues for freshman middle blocker Paige Alsten, as she recorded six blocks, one solo and five block assists, in the three-setter against FIU. Alsten has a team-high 32 blocks on the season, with 15 of them coming in the last two matches. The freshman has totaled three or more blocks in five of the team's eight matches in 2015.
NOTABLES
- Penrod's 17 digs give the junior double-digit dig totals in all five matches she has played this season.
- Morgan MacGilvary led the Bears in kills with nine.
- Penrod served up an ace on Saturday, marking the junior's 10th straight match with at least one ace.
- Sophomore Claire Waliczek assisted on 21 kills, just one assist shy of her season high. The 21-kill performance marks the second time this season Waliczek has exceeded the 20-kill plateau.
- With the loss, Mercer now has an all-time record of 4-7 against FIU.
RECORDS UPDATE
The loss moves Mercers' overall record on the season to 1-7, while FIU improves to 6-2 in 2015.
UP NEXT
Mercer comes home to Hawkins Arena to play Troy in the Bears' home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. to open up a three-match home stand.
