
Mercer Downed by Furman in SoCon Matchup

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Mercer volleyball team wrapped up the opening weekend of Southern Conference action with its second road match in as many nights. The Bears were defeated by Furman on Saturday evening by a final of 3-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Paladins had the upper hand in the first frame and took the set by a score of 25-20. Mercer fought back in the second and was on the brink of leveling the match on multiple occasions. The Bears had six set points in the second set but the Paladins managed to fight each one off and then took the stanza by a score of 30-28. Furman ended the match in the third, taking the final frame 25-22 to earn the straight-set victory.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Emily Krogman's eight kills tied the sophomore for the team lead Saturday against the Paladins. The eight came on just 20 attempts and Krogman finished the match with an efficient attack percentage of .300. Krogman also totaled two blocks and two digs in Greenville, S.C.
STAT OF THE NIGHT
The Mercer attack was well balanced in the match, featuring four different players with either seven or eight kills. Krogman and Morgan MacGilvary tied for the team lead with eight kills, while Paige Alsten and Monica Johnson each added seven of their own to give the offense depth. Jordan Gollon was also in on the action, recording five kills on 10 attempts.
NOTABLES
- Junior Tori Penrod totaled two aces on the evening, marking the junior's 15th straight match with at least one ace and fifth consecutive match with multiple aces.
- MacGilvary has now led or tied for the team lead in kills in 10-of-13 matches this season.
- Penrod recorded a team-high 20 digs and has reached double-digit digs in all 10 matches she has played in 2015.
- Gollon led the Bears in blocks with five, marking the second time this season she has posted at least five blocks in a match.
- Alsten notched three blocks on Saturday and has now had multiple blocks in eight consecutive matches and 11-of-13 matches on the season.
RECORDS UPDATE
The loss drops the Bears record to 4-9 on the season and 0-2 in SoCon play. Furman improves to 8-4 in 2015 and starts league action with a 2-0 record after the opening weekend.
UP NEXT
Mercer returns home for a midweek match against The Citadel, which will be the Bears' home SoCon opener. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 30 and first serve is slated for 6 p.m. EST.
