
Mercer Wins Opening Match at CofC Invitational on Friday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Mercer beach volleyball team won the first of three matches it will play at the CofC Beach Invitational over the weekend with a 3-2 victory over the hosts College of Charleston. Mercer improves to 5-3 on the season with the win.
The Bears split the No. 1 and 2 positions against the Cougars. The sister pairing of Emma and Sophie Peel rolled to a 21-12, 21-12 victory at the No. 2 spot while the tandem of Emily Krogman and Tori Penrod fell at No. 1 in a close two-set match by a final of 21-17, 22-20.
The Orange and Black fell at No. 3 but the bottom of the lineup came through to deliver Mercer the victory. Claire Waliczek and Danielle Faust won fairly comfortably at the No. 5 position, 21-17, 21-15, and the No. 4 pair of Morgan MacGilvary and Madison Kerr won a tight three-setter by a score of 21-18, 18-21, 15-12. The pairing of MacGilvary and Kerr is 3-0 on the season with the win.
Mercer is now 2-2 against College of Charleston in the all-time series.

UP NEXT
Mercer returns to the sand tomorrow for a pair of matches to wrap up its stay in Charleston. The Bears begin Saturday with what appears to be their toughest test of the season, as they play the top ranked team in the country in Pepperdine at 8 a.m. Mercer then turns around faces Lincoln Memorial at 3 p.m. in its final match of the weekend.
