
Mercer Men's Golf Concludes Season at Final Day of SoCon Championship

PINEHURST, N.C. – The Mercer University men's golf team wrapped up the 2015-16 season with the third and final round of the SoCon Championship on Tuesday. The Bears shot their best score of the tournament with a 300 (12-over) in the final 18 holes. The tournament was held at Pinehurst No. 9, a Jack Nicklaus Signature course.

THE BEARS IN THE TEAM STANDINGS
Mercer's final score of 918 (54-over) placed the team in eighth in the SoCon field. The Bears final round was the best of the championship for the team. ETSU won the SoCon title with a total score of 12-over after the 54 holes of play. UNCG placed second with a 13-over and Furman came in third at 15-over.
MERCER SPOTLIGHT
A pair of underclassmen led the Orange and Black in the final round of the tournament, as sophomore Jerry Ren and freshman Hayes Rule each fired a 73 on Tuesday to finish 1-over par for the day. Ren totaled a team-high five birdies, with four coming on the front nine. Ren had a stretch of three consecutive birdies on holes 1-3. Rule was consistent in his round, totaling two birdies, three bogeys and 13 pars.
COACH KAYDEN'S TAKE
"The guys competed well today as all the teams shot around the 296-300 range. Jerry and Hayes had solid rounds for us. We were able to make some more birdies today and we avoided carding high numbers on holes."
MERCER NOTABLES
- The Bears totaled 13 birdies on Tuesday, with Ren posting a team-high five birdies, the most of any Mercer player in a round at the 2016 SoCon Championship.
- Bogdanovich played the par 3s as well as anyone over the three days, tying for the best score of 2-under on the holes.
- Ren finished the tournament with a team-best nine birdies over the 54 holes of play.
