MACON, Ga. – Senior infielder Matt Meeder drove an RBI single into center field, sending Danny Edgeworth home from second, as the Bears rallied for a 6-5 win over Georgia Tuesday night in Macon.
Trailing 4-2, Mercer (4-0) used a three-run seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead. Georgia (1-2) would score on a wild pitch in the eighth before Meeder provided his timely hit in the ninth to clinch the win for Mercer.
The game included six home runs and a total of 22 strikeouts as batters resulted in either feast for famine. Five out of the six home runs came in the first five innings.
Mercer's win marked the fourth victory over Georgia in the last five meetings between the teams.
A Mercer record crowd of 2,417 was on-hand for both the thrilling win and the opening of the grandstands at the new OrthoGeorgia Park.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
This goes to Matt Meeder who drove in the winning run and was rewarded with ice water dumped on his head mid-postgame interview. While only 1-for-4 from the plate, his one hit was critical in securing the win and he wasn't fazed by heading to the plate with runners on first and second and one out, setting up a potential double play for Georgia. Instead, Meeder smacked the ball into center field and Edgeworth raced home from second for the winning run.
STAT OF THE GAME
Most of the game was marked by either strikeouts or long balls. Both teams combined for six home runs (and a total of seven extra-base hits) out of 16 hits total in the game while the eight different pitchers for both teams combined for 22 total strikeouts.
PITCHERS OF RECORD
"They have a really good club. Their starter was tough (tonight) and he was tough against us last year. But I told the guys last weekend that I don't think you're a good club until you can come from behind. We were able to battle, get a couple balls in the air. It's a fun game, a great way to open up the park against a great club and we just happened to come out on the right end tonight."
